College Frequently asked questions

  • When is the 11+ entry examination for entry?

    The entrance examination takes place in the January before entry in September of that year. The date is organised in consultation with other major independent schools. Registration to take the exam must take place before 30th November of the year preceding entry.

  • What is your academic profile?

    St George's is an academic school where all students strive for academic excellence. The ethos of the curriculum is academic throughout, the aim being to prepare and qualify students for the ultimate destination of higher education. It is also the College's mission to develop the spiritual, moral, physical and social needs of the students.
  • What are your entry requirements?

    Students wishing to join at 11+ are required to take the College 11+ entrance examination in January. Students should be registered in the normal way by the 30th November.  The examination is in Mathematics, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.  Specimen papers are available from the College.


    At 13+ entries, students can sit a pre test at 11+ or a pre test at 12+.  It is advisable to register for this when the child is in Year 6.  For more information on the pre tests contact Admissions Secretary Mrs Freda Pink at the information desk in Orchard Hall.


    Entry to the Sixth Form (16+) is dependent on students obtaining in the order of 6 'A' grades overall with 'A' grades required in the intended A level subjects.  There will be a need for an interview with the Head of Sixth Form.

  • Do you offer any scholarships?

    Scholarships are awarded at the College to recognise previous achievement, acknowledge existing excellence and forecast potential and to show the importance and potential that the College places upon various areas of the academic and wider curriculum.


    The College offers four types of scholarship - Academic, Music, Art and Sport/Drama. At 11+ scholarships can be taken in Academic, Music and Sports only, at 13+ these three scholarships can be taken and in addition Art and Drama.

  • How many students do you have?

    There are currently 880 students, including the Sixth Form.  The split is almost 50/50 boys and girls.  

  • Do you have to be Catholic to go to St George's?

    St George's College welcomes children of all Christian denominations.

  • What is your maximum class size?

    Our maximum class size is 22.  Subjects such as Modern Languages and Maths are taught in smaller sets whilst in the Sixth Form the teaching groups comprise between 8-13 students.

  • Where do I buy school uniform?

    The school uniform and sports kit are available from The College Shop situated on the main College site. 

    There is also a second-hand clothing shop which sells good quality pre-owned uniforms.

  • How long is your school day?

    The school opens from 8.00am and the teaching day begins at 8.40am and finishes at 4.00pm. Many of our students take part in activities, clubs and societies after school.


    The school library is available for quiet study from 8.00am until 5.30pm.

  • My child likes music; what does St George's have to offer?

    In the First, Second and Third Years all students receive tuition in practical keyboard performance basic composition and music theory. In addition, a high proportion of students choose to take instrumental and singing lessons from a distinguished team of 37 peripatetic teachers visiting the College each week.


    There is a range and variety in music-making. The College Choir enjoys a fine reputation and has made annual tours to Europe for over thirty years.


    Throughout the year there are many opportunities for students to perform. These include the Inter House Music Competition, a series of Informal Chamber Concerts, Jazzfest, regular concerts in the College Chapel and a Summer Serenade.groups, jazz, rock groups, music theatre, a bagpipe group, Gamelan Orchestra, as well as more traditional ensembles (choirs, orchestras, and wind bands).


    Students from St George's College play in the National Youth Orchestra, National Independent Schools Symphony Orchestra, and National Children's Orchestra. Our students win scholarships to the major conservatories in London and former students currently hold key positions in the music profession both here and abroad.

  • What are your sports facilities like?

    The College offers outstanding sports facilities. For tennis, there are three floodlit clay courts and the four-court indoor tennis centre run in association with the Surrey Lawn Tennis Association.  There are also four additional hard courts, eight all weather and three grass courts.  There is are two floodlit artificial surfaces for hockey, a modern athletics track, floodlit netball courts, rugby, football and cricket pitches and our own boat club situated in Walton-on-Thames. The College has two indoor sports hall.  The College is also able to make use of local golf courses.

  • How much opportunity will my child have to use a computer?

    St George's has in excess of 200 networked computers located around the College. In addition to the dedicated ICT Resources Rooms, every department has modern projection facilities linked directly to the internet and other resources. All students have their own email address and have access to the Internet. In the First and Second Year students have time-tabled ICT lessons.


  • My child is a vegetarian; will that be a problem at lunchtime?

    No. Lunches are prepared on site and great attention is given to providing children with wholesome and varied menus. Children have a choice of a main hot meal with a vegetarian option, pasta, jacket potatoes, soup, a salad bar, filled baguettes or salad boxes, a hot dessert, yoghurts, fresh fruit or fruit juice. From the Third Year, students may also opt to bring in a packed lunch. There is a termly charge for lunches.

  • We live in Guildford; how might my son and daughter get to and from the College?

    In addition to travelling by train to Addlestone station, St George's operates an extensive coach which stops at Guildford station that can be booked on a termly basis from the following areas:

  • What is your policy on bullying?

    Bullying of any kind is not acceptable nor tolerated at St George's. The school has a fully developed bullying policy.


    No student of the school has the right to put pressure on another in anyway and to do so is wrong. Students are encouraged to tell a friend, their Tutor, Head of Year or Subject Teacher, the School Chaplain or a parent. There is a strong pastoral support system at the College. All students have a Form Tutor who meets with them twice a day, for their Personal and Social Education (PSE) lesson and for their two tutor group meetings each week. The tutor is the first point of contact for parents and students, and provides support and guidance for students. Each year group has a Head of Year or Senior Tutor who oversees the pastoral work of their year team and students.

  • Do you take children who have special educational needs or children who have a disability?

    Families with children who have a disability or a special educational need are asked to enquire with the College well before the time of entry to determine the suitability of the School. St George's is a selective entry school and all children must reach the academic criteria for entry. However, we have many years of experience in helping able children with mild dyslexia through our academic support teacher. Parents are asked to give a full disclosure of the nature of any disability which their child has so that we can determine if we can make reasonable adjustments to accommodate him/her. We have a disability policy which addresses many issues such as homework, copies of which can be obtained upon request. We are aware of the disability discrimination act.

  • Do you have Saturday School?

    There is no academic teaching on Saturdays; however children may be involved in sports fixtures or activities during the day.

  • What kind of education can I expect from your school?

    At St George's College Junior School personalised attention ensures that pupils master the skills of reading, writing and mathematics in the early years. The School inspires boys and girls to enjoy learning through varied lessons and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.



    Christian values and the School's guiding principles of honesty and compassion are reflected in all activities. Pupils are expected to demonstrate high moral values and a genuine concern and compassion for each other and those in need.

  • How old are the children in the Nursery?

    Children begin the Nursery at 3 years old and progress to Year Reception as rising five year olds.


  • What is the balance between boys and girls?

    We do not discriminate on grounds of gender, but our view of co-ed is within a 60/40 boundary either way which usually works out as between 50% and 55% boys. 

  • My daughter would like to learn French; what age do you introduce French?

    Children start French in Year 1.

  • How many students do you have at the Junior School?

    There are currently 590 pupils in the Junior School with 65 children in the Nursery

  • Do you have to be Catholic to go to St George's College Junior School?

    No.  The School welcomes children who belong to other Christian traditions.

  • Is St George's College Junior School large for a junior school?

    The Junior School has all the benefits of a large school, such as facilities, but has the advantage of small teaching classes.

    The Junior School is divided into three sections - the Foundation Key Stage years in Nursery and Reception, Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6).

    Each Key Stage has a dedicated member of the Senior Management Team to look after it.

  • What is your maximum class size?

    Our policy on class sizes is that we normally operate on 18-20 being the usual number in the Lower Years; however, there will be occasions during the course of a school year when the numbers lie both below and above by a small amount without affecting the quality of education. In the Upper Years, as a general rule we aim for 20 pupils per form; sometimes we have slightly fewer and, occasionally, slightly more.

  • Do your students wear a uniform?

    Yes.  There is a strict uniform for all students from Nursery upwards including sports kit. No jewellery can be worn.

    The uniform is available from The College Shop that is situated on the main College site.

  • What is your teacher to pupil ratio?

    In the Nursery the ratio is 1 adult to every 8 children.  In Reception, each class has a Teaching Assistant, providing a ratio of c 1:9 ensuring students gain personalised attention and support from their teachers.



    In years 1 & 2 there are two dedicated Teaching Assistants shared among four classes.  Extra in class support from specialist learning support staff will be available throughout the year.  In Years 1 & 2 Teaching Assistants work with the four Group Tutors providing a ratio of c 1:9/10 and at times a ratio of  c 1:18/20.  From Year 3 to Year 6, the ratio is anything between 1:18 and 1:22.

  • How long is your school day?

    The school doors open at 8.00am and close at 5.00pm.  Children must be collected from after school activities by 5.00pm.

    The Nursery hours are from 9.00am to 12.00pm for those children attending mornings only sessions.  The hours for those children attending full time are from 9.00am to 3.00pm.

    For the remainder of the school, lessons begin at 8.50am and finish between 3.15pm and 3.40pm depending upon the age of the child.

    Reception, Years 1 & 2 finishes at 3.15 pm and Years 3 to 6 at 3.40 pm.

    There is a free supervised homework club run by members of the teaching staff after school.  In addition there is a supervised waiting class for pupils in Reception to Year 2 until 4.45pm every day.

  • My child likes ballet; do you offer dance at the Junior School?

    Yes. Pupils can also learn ballet, tap, street jazz and modern dance.

  • What is the standard of your sporting facilities?

    The Junior School has a fully equipped gymnasium, an artificial playing surface, all-weather tennis and netball courts as well as a heated outdoor swimming pool.

    The Junior School has its own playing fields and also makes use of the College sports facilities, such as the Indoor Tennis Centre and the athletics track.

  • How often will my child have the opportunity to use a computer?

    Every day. In addition to computers in the classrooms, the Junior School has three fully equipped computer suites comprising 70 fully networked computers with interactive whiteboards.

  • My child is a vegetarian; will that be a problem at lunchtime?

    Wholesome meals are cooked on site. Children are offered varied menus, including vegetarian options and a salad bar for the Upper Years.

    Lunches are compulsory for Junior School children from Reception to Year 6.

  • We live in Twickenham; can you suggest the best way for my son and daughter to get to and from school?

    St George's operates an extensive coach service that can be booked on a termly basis from the following areas:

    Camberley, Ascot via Virginia Water, Old Windsor, Teddington, Sunbury, Kingston, Claygate, Guildford, Woking, Walton and a Weybridge service. There is also a shuttle service that operates between the Junior School and the Senior School. Further information is available from the Admissions Secretary  01932 839347.

    We recommend that young children should only use the service if accompanied by an older sibling. Otherwise, we insist that the minimum age should be 7 years old.

  • What is your policy on bullying?

    The family ethos of the school promotes a sense of mutual support and compassion amongst the pupils. This ensures that there is very little teasing in the school and that bullying or being given a hard time by pupils and/or staff is not tolerated.


  • Do you take children who have special educational needs?

    Pupils within the Junior School who are experiencing difficulties with their academic work or who are identified as having specific learning needs will have appropriate support made available to them through specialist teachers. Demand for places at the Junior School is high and candidates seeking admission will undertake assessments in Literacy and Numeracy and will be offered places provided they reach the required standard for entry.

    The School uses the services of The Surrey Language Centre to provide support for pupils with English as an Additional Language.

  • We would like to look around the Junior School, how do we arrange that?

  • Is transfer to the Senior School automatic?

    It is expected that all pupils from the Junior School will progress to St George’s College. The College is academically selective and pupils will gain entry, provided they meet the required academic standard. Junior School pupils are thoroughly prepared for the 11+ entrance examination which takes place in January of Year 6. Junior School pupils seeking entry to the College do not need to re register for entry at age 11.


  • Do you need to apply for a scholarship to St George's College?

    Yes.  For those pupils seeking a Sport or Music 11+ Scholarship at St George's College they must apply to the Headmaster's Secretary at the College.  Completed applications must be received before the end of November prior to the September entry.

    Academic scholarships are awarded by the College at 11+ on the basis of the child's performance in the entrance exam.

  • Do you have first aid trained staff?

    Yes.  The Junior School employs dedicated first aid staff and all staff are trained in basic first aid.

  • Do you offer individual music lessons?

    Yes.  Individual music lessons are offered in all instruments including the harp. These lessons may be held before, during and after school. Music lessons are paid for on a termly basis.

  • Do children have the opportunity to go on school trips?

    Yes.  School trips include outings to the theatre, places of interest and cultural significance.  

    Year 5 pupils are invited to go on a two day residential trip to Normandy in the Spring.  Year 6 pupils are invited to take part in the residential outward bound course at Bowles which takes place during the summer half term.

  • My child would like to play in an orchestra - does St George's College Junior School have an orchestra?

    Yes. The School has an Orchestra and Jazz Band.  In addition, there is a recorder, a string, a guitar and a brass ensemble.  Music theory is also taught as a lunchtime activity. 

    The Junior School has two choirs – Year 3 and 4 Choir and the Chapel Choir.  All children sing at various points during the year as part of the wider music curriculum.

  • Do children attend Mass?

    There is a weekly Mass for pupils in Years 3 to 6.  Children in Reception to Year 2 also have their own special liturgies on Feast Days organised by the school Chaplain.  Parents are always welcome at these chapel services.

  • Are there parents' social events?

    St George's College Parent's Society organise social events for both the Junior and Senior Schools. The events provide a social forum where parents, teachers and the Josephite Community have the opportunity to meet. Events vary from new parents' social evenings to the Quiz Night, the Spring Fete and the Summer Ball. In addition to the social benefits of these events, money raised is donated to the two schools.

  • Do you offer after-school activities?

    There is a wide range of activities available at the Junior School. Parents are notified termly of the activities on offer.  These include music, sport, chess and various creative activities.
