A summer of tennis at National Championships
As many of their peers relaxed and enjoyed the sunshine over the summer break, 12 boys and girls from St George's Junior School travelled to Millfield School in Somerset to participate in the IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) National Tennis Championships.
Year 6 pupil Toby Clarke was participating in the tournament and he has written a report on how St George's pupils got on in their matches:
"With glorious weather and surroundings, the first day featured the doubles tournament. Our pairings for the boys were: Toby and James, Josh and Sam, and Arthur and Nicky. The girls' pairings were: Sienna C and Sienna W, Lauren and Olivia, and Eleanor and Kiera. After a busy day full of great tennis, the two Siennas and Toby and James qualified for the semi finals.
The second day featured the singles tournament, with over 100 participants from all over the country competing. Placed in round robin groups, all of the players competed in a number of hard fought matches, which resulted in Toby, James and Sienna W getting through to the round of 16. This was no mean feat as they had to win six matches just to get to this stage!
On the final day, the competition proved too tough for St George’s in the singles tournament and our players bowed out gracefully, but not without putting up a fight first! However, in the doubles, Toby and James battled on winning their semi final match against a strong pair. The rallies were first class and Toby and James played some brilliant doubles and won 6-2!
The final was an extremely tough match and Toby and James played very well, but were beaten 6-3 by a stronger pair from Aldwickbury School. All in all, it was a great event and a fantastic experience for all the players involved. We will be back again next year!"
