St George's Staff try their hand at rowing in Weybridge Community Regatta
As the students at St George's, Weybridge enjoy a well-earned Summer break, some members of the Teaching and Business Staff at St George's have continued working...on their rowing skills at the Weybridge Community Regatta.
On Friday 28 July, 6 members of staff from St George's joined a whole host of local businesses and organisations at the Elmbridge Canoe Club, just across the road from St George's Junior School, to compete in a number of rowing events at the Regatta.
St George's was represented by 2 crews at the event.
SGC1 crew: This crew included Miss Marns (Junior School Music Teacher), and Ms Wilson (Junior School Curriculum Leader of Science), as well as two other last minute, willing stand-ins, including ex pupil Harriet Fisher and Alicia, who has links with St George's.
SGC2 crew: Mr Stather (Head of Biology), Mr Jones (Maintenance Manager), Mrs Tomlinson (Junior School Girls' Games Teacher), Mrs Crawforth (Assistant Examinations).
After limited practice in the boats before the event, and with some rowing for the very first time, the crews got ready for the competition. As well as racing in the Regatta, each crew also took part in a time trial and took part in an ERGO relay competition (where each crew member had to complete as many metres as they could on a rowing machine).
In the Regatta, both crews competed in the non-experienced draw and both teams performed brilliantly. SGC1 crew (including Miss Marns and Ms Wilson) finished in 2nd place overall after storming into the final where they were narrowly beaten, whilst the SGC2 crew were pipped to the post at the quarter final stage.
There was even better news for the SGC1 crew in the time trials though, as they put in another blistering performance to win the time trial for the all-women's crews!!
It was a fantastic day out and St George's was well represented throughout the day, with each member of staff competing with determination, enthusiasm and lots of laughter. Well done to both teams on their success.
