Summer Concert a staggering success

Back in May, parents of St George's Junior School pupils were treated to two wonderful evenings of exceptional music-making at the Junior School as over 100 pupils performed in the annual Summer Concert.

Music Teacher at the Junior School, My Lloyd, has written a review of the concert:

"Featuring solos, choirs, ensembles and orchestra, the concert was a wonderful celebration of the pupils’ achievements this year, and of their many years of dedicated practice. The concert opened with a rousing performance of All of me by pupils in the Orchestra and Senior Choir, joining forces for the first time.

Solo performances on violin, flute, saxophone, oboe, piano, cello, trumpet and drums showcased the winners of the Inter-House Music Competition, and the audience was treated to music ranging from Chopin to Lloyd Webber, from Mozart to Duke Ellington. Super Strings lived up to their name, and Brass Ensemble contrasted the lyrical Chorale with the athletic The Magician. A highlight was the first performance by the Cello Ensemble, a new group this year to cater for the growing number and rising standard of cellists in the school. The Orchestra brought the first half of the concert to an impressive close with its improvisation-infused performance of Chitlins con carne; the creativity and musical awareness shown by pupils as they made up their solos on the spot was truly remarkable.

The second half of the concert showcased the singing talents of the pupils. Ryan Harding gave a spirited performance of Consider yourself, and Ella MacGregor, winner of the Inter-House Singing Competition, gave a spell-binding rendition of A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square. Junior and Chamber Choirs sang upbeat pieces by Bob Chilcott, and Senior Choir relished singing Happy by Pharrell Williams. Rockshop enthused the audience with their performance of Rolling in the deep by Adele. The pupils were afforded a brief rest as the Staff Ensemble played The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba - an opportunity for pupils and parents to see the Music Department ‘in action’, before the final number, a massed Choirs performance of I got Summer time Flintstones, an arrangement by Mr Hodgson of several well-known tunes which combined together in a glorious celebration of music this year at the Junior School.

Special thanks to the Music Department and its Director, Mrs Hooley, for their encouragement of the pupils during the year. The many arrangements and orchestrations specially made for the concert to support the pupils in their performances was hugely appreciated. The pupils were also fortunate to be joined by the visiting drum and guitar teachers, Mr Arnold and Mr Daniel, who joined the Music Department staff in providing the instrumental backings for many of the solo performances."
