Under 10A girls' rounders team unbeaten on way to winning Downsend Rounders Tournament
On Saturday 20 May, the Under 10A girls' rounders team participated in the Downsend School Rounders Tournament. St George's Junior School girls were playing matches of one innings of 18 good balls, so they knew they needed to bat strong and field securely.
First up, the girls had to compete in 4 group games against St Teresa’s Effingham, City of London Freemen's School, Rowan School and Danes Hill School.
Results were as follows:
Game 1 v St. Teresa’s – won - 8.5 rounders to 1
Game 2 v City of London Freemen's School – won - 7 rounders to 1
Game 3 v Rowan School – won - 6.5 rounders to 1.5
Game 4 v Danes Hill School – won - 7.5 rounders to 3
After 4 brilliant victories, St George's won the group and advanced to the semi finals against the runners up from the other pool – the hosts, Downsend School. The home ground advantage did not deter the girls as they put in another strong performance to win with a total of 4.5 rounders to 0.5! The girls’ outstanding team work and strong fielding meant the opposition only scored half a rounder! The team was now through to the final against the winner from the other pool – Holy Cross School.
Holy Cross are renowned as a strong rounders school, so the girls were determined to finish the morning unbeaten. Our girls were batting first and knew they had to set a high benchmark in order to put pressure on the opposition. Confident and mammoth hitting from the girls enabled them to score 7 rounders – a strong total for Holy Cross to chase. Time to field and the girls were definitely up for the challenge. Holy Cross only managed 1.5 rounders in their batting innings, so St George's had done it! The girls had won the tournament and more remarkably, remained unbeaten throughout!
Congratulations to all of the girls involved, they were outstanding throughout the morning remaining positive, confident and working together as a team.22 May 2017
