Pupils at St George's College Junior School celebrated World Smile Day with its motto 'Do an act of kindness, make one person smile!'

In October pupils at St George's College Junior School celebrated World Smile Day with its motto 'Do an act of kindness, make one person smile!'

As an extension of that motto the pupils were encouraged to take part in the Blue Peter Appeal 'Send a Smile'. The Appeal asks children to turn unwanted t-shirts into surgical gowns. These gowns will then be sent to Operation Smile, a global charity that performs free surgery on children with clefts. They will then use the gowns during future medical projects and save vital funds. Blue Peter estimate that if they can collect 20,000 gowns, Operation Smile will save a staggering £60,000 - that's enough money for at least 300 children in Guwahati, India to receive a free operation.

At St George's College Junior School the pupils want to help put a smile back onto these children's faces. All pupils have been encouraged to take part in making a gown which will be forwarded to Blue Peter. Pupils had fun over the half term decorating their t-shirts with glitter, ribbons, paints, pens and all kinds of craft material. So far the school has collected 353 gowns.

Mrs Diane Butlin, Head of Year 5 who has organized helping the appeal said "This is a fantastic appeal; the pupils have had such fun making the gowns and I am delighted at the response we have had. I am all for anything that has children helping other children".
