John Millwood-Hargraves
On 23rd January, John Millwood-Hargraves a Lower Sixth Student from St George’s College, Weybridge was cycling between Esher and Walton when he noticed someone in difficulty at the side of the road. John asked the man if he needed help, the man did not respond, but collapsed in front of him.
John who had passed his St Johns Ambulance First Aid training, taught by St George’s College school matron Mrs Anne Sweeny, for his bronze Duke of Edinburgh award when he was at the end of his Fourth Year noted symptoms of a suspected heart attack and started CPR on the man until an ambulance arrived.
One of the ambulance crew commended John for ‘doing the right thing’ and suspected that the man would make a good recovery. The man was taken to hospital and John continued his cycle home, shaken by the experience but relieved he had been able to help someone by doing the right thing.
