Junior School Academic Overview

Junior School academic overview

During their time at the Junior School, pupils enjoy developing the attitudes and skills necessary to become independent and life-long learners in a challenging, safe, secure and stimulating environment.

Within the Catholic, Christian, Josephite ethos of the School, the differentiated teaching offered to pupils is carefully planned and tailored to meet individual needs. This enables the process of learning to be open, enjoyable and fulfilling while ensuring progress and continuity across the entire curriculum.

All pupils are equally valued and encouraged to fulfil their aspirations and potential in an environment of broadly based education, within which they are encouraged to strive consistently to achieve beyond their own expectations in academic, sporting and extra-curricular activities.

The excellent quality of education offered at the School goes well beyond the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and is carefully structured and delivered in a way appropriate to the age and needs of individual pupils.

Our facilities and staffing enable us to provide a comprehensive breadth of curriculum, with specialist teaching starting at the age of five in French, ICT, Music, PE and Games and in Year Five and Year Six in all subjects.. The structure enables all pupils to achieve their full potential across the range of National Curriculum subjects, together with Religious Education, Personal Social and Health Education.

The use of ICT to support teaching and learning is well established within the School with pupils having access to three fully equipped networked computer suites as well as interactive whiteboards which are used by specialist subject teachers and class based teachers to enhance curriculum delivery.

Careful planning of the curriculum ensures that work is matched to pupils' abilities, experiences and interests, whilst ensuring there is progression, continuity and balanced subject coverage throughout and between each phase of the pupils' education. We place great importance on preparing pupils for transition from one phase to the next. In the Foundation Stage more formal timetabling and routines are gradually established and pupils transferring from Key Stage One to Key Stage Two have the opportunity to become familiar with staff and the environment in the Upper Years.

Pupils' work is constantly monitored by staff using formal and informal assessment and reporting criteria. All pupils in years 1 to Year 6 complete a series of annual standardised assessments in Reading, Spelling, English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. In addition, Year 6 pupils take part in the National Curriculum Key Stage Two tests in English, Mathematics and Science with the School's results being consistently well above the national average.  Parents are regularly informed of their child's progress in twice yearly Reports, half-termly Grade Cards as well as Parent/Teacher Consultation Meetings.
