A and AS level

A-level St George's College

The curriculum in St George's Sixth Form is broad and 22 subjects are on offer, which provide ample scope for students who wish to study a variety of courses at university.

In the Lower Sixth, students study a minimum of four AS Levels. On offer is a flexible combination for four AS Level subjects ranging from the sciences to the arts. The addition of a further compulsory broadening option chosen from Philosophy or Critical Thinking AS Level, Psychology GCSE, ECDL, Sports Leadership Award, or a range of  non- certificated courses such as Life Skills, Performing Arts and Art, increases the breadth and also the depth of study at St George's Sixth.

In the Upper Sixth students choose a minimum of three of their AS Level subjects to convert to A2 Levels. Some students opt to continue with all four of their AS subjects to A2.

Throughout the Sixth Form, all students follow a PSE course in their tutor groups which allows opportunities to debate current issues such as global warming, whilst being supported with vital information on important issues such as AIDS and other pertinent topics. They also follow a Religious Studies course, which involves an outreach programme in preparing and delivering in groups, a relevant Biblical theme to young children in local Primary Schools.

A variety of field trips and visits are incorporated into the curriculum to broaden students' awareness of the world in which they live.  Past trips have included trips to Prague and Paris for the Business Studies and Economics classes and Germany and France for Modern Languages AS groups.  In addition, regular excursions to theatres, museums and galleries are scheduled throughout the year.

Wednesday afternoons are dedicated to games. Students can opt to participate in competitive sport during this period or pursue more recreational sports. This depends entirely upon the interests and abilities of the student.  St George's Sixth Form has an excellent record both on and off the games field and believes that this is further evidence, if any were needed, of our comprehensive and fulfilling Sixth Form life!

Extra-curricular activities are plentiful and amongst many activities, students may volunteer to assist at the weekly Kennedy Club for local people with learning difficulties, join the Tattered Coat Arts Society for those with cultural leanings or participate with the younger students helping to run the activities programme.

Whether it is academic excellence or the chance of responsibility as a Prefect, Mentor, House or Games Captain you are looking for, you will find that St George's Sixth Form can offer you all this and more.
