Academic Support College

St George's College White House

For the small number of students from across the age and ability range who are able to meet the entrance requirements and who have learning difficulties or disabilities the College has an Academic Support system that aims to ensure that these students achieve their potential. Research and experience have shown that there is no connection between a learning difficulty and intelligence, but students with a diagnosed learning difficulty will usually need help to learn strategies to work effectively.

Aims

Academic Support, in accordance with the College Mission Statement to:
'Create an environment where all, whatever their strengths and weaknesses, will be equally valued and encouraged to fulfil their aspirations and potential'
seeks to achieve this through:

  • Specialist provision for students with a range of learning difficulties.
  • The dissemination of relevant information to staff regarding the nature of individual student's needs.
  • Working in partnership with the student, parents, subject departments, the pastoral team and, if necessary, outside agencies to support full access to the curriculum.
  • Monitoring the progress of student's who are on the Academic Support Information lists.
  • Academic support lessons are offered to students who need additional or different support. The primary focus of academic support lessons is study skills.
  • Consultation with Subject Departments on the development of differentiated teaching strategies and resources.
  • The organisation of Access Arrangements e.g. extra time in examinations, if appropriate.

Academic Support Lessons

Academic Support lessons are on an individual/small group withdrawal basis with the primary aim of helping the student to realise their potential. The teaching aims to show these children their own best ways of dealing with their learning difficulties: how to tackle learning work, note-taking, essay-writing, reading assignments, revision and organisation. Academic Support lessons offer help with revision, if necessary, of the basics of spelling, punctuation and grammar, but also with the higher-level literacy skills required for public examinations.
There is an additional charge for academic support lessons currently £155 per term; the full cost is subsidised by the College.
