Catering

St George's College operates a fresh food policy. Food is prepared from fresh ingredients on site by qualified chefs, assisted by a team of catering and dining room assistants. We aim to provide variety in our menu planning and enough choice for students to enjoy a healthy varied diet. In addition to two main course choices every day, accompanied by two vegetables and a potato or rice option, there is always a vegetarian option, jacket potato and pasta station plus a full salad bar; a fresh bread roll is provided.

Filled baguettes are on offer as an option daily and, in the winter months, a fresh soup of the day is an addition to the menu. On a daily basis, students can choose either a hot or cold pudding or yoghurt for dessert. There is an unlimited amount of fresh fruit every day and filtered drinking water is freely available, lunch for the First and Second Year students is compulsory. From the Third Year students are allowed to bring packed lunches.

Parents may wish to be aware that the College does not offer sweetened or carbonated drinks in its vending machines. Salt is not provided on the table and is used sparingly in cooking. The College catering department does not use any kind of nuts when catering for lunchtime and of the few bought in products which are used, ingredient labels are checked for any trace elements. Parents who have an interest in or a concern about school lunches are very welcome to come and observe lunch service and talk to the chefs any day of the week. The catering department caters also for all the College functions and the Catering Manager is happy to provide quotations for outside functions.

The Orchard Hall operates a turnstile entrance system for which all students (and staff) are issued with a swipe card which must be used on entering the dining room. This system enables us to record who is coming for lunch on a daily basis and records of all turnstile activity are monitored regularly. Should a student not have their swipe card with them, they will still be admitted to the Orchard Hall but will have to wait until the end of lunchtime service to be allowed entry to the Orchard Hall for lunch. Should they lose their swipe card or it is damaged beyond use there is a charge of £5 for a replacement. Swipe cards are routinely replaced at the beginning of each school year (September).
