Sports at St George's College

St George's College believes that providing a variety of opportunities in sports for all is essential both for health and fitness reasons as well as the sense of achievement and value that active participation and successful competition bring. This however, does not compromise our desire to fully extend our most talented performers and enable them to play at the highest possible standard. Students and teams regularly win trophies and National Titles as well as representing their county and Country throughout the three terms.

There is wide range of sports available and the main sports include boys' hockey, girls' hockey, rugby, netball, cricket, golf, rounders, rowing, and tennis. All students are encouraged to play fixtures at A and B team level at all year groups with games being played on Saturdays in addition to some on weekdays.

The physical education programme offers a wide range of sporting activities including: badminton, gymnastics, dance, football, volleyball, athletics, rounders, basketball, and trampolining. Many of these options involve an inter-house competition organised by year groups.

In the Sixth Form, the Department offers highly successful AS and A2 courses in Sports Studies. These multi-dimensional courses enable students from a wide variety of subject background to explore current issues in sport.

Each sport has specialist sports staff (including PE) but alongside these coaches there is a wealth of knowledge given by members of the academic teaching staff as well as a professional rugby and cricket coach.

The College sports facilities are excellent and are within the attractive College grounds and the rowers have use of their own Boat House at Walton-on-Thames. The tennis facilities at St George's College are among the very the best in the country. The College boasts twenty-six courts in total including four indoor acrylic, three grass, three clay, eight artificial grass and seven tarmac courts. The facilities at the College are excellent and include 5 carefully maintained cricket squares, 6 outdoor astro-turf nets, 4 indoor nets. There are three floodlit outside courts and one indoor court in the main sports hall, netball also makes use of the small gymnasium for some specialist training and practices. Hockey facilities include two artificial floodlit pitches as well as the sports hall for indoor hockey. The rugby facilities at St George's College are excellent and the 1st XV pitch must be one of the best grounds for both players and spectators. The pitch is situated along the College drive with an enchanting view of the 19th century cricket pavilion providing a backdrop. There is the very popular outdoor athletics track. In addition to the outdoor facilities the College has a well equipped Sports Hall and Gymnasium as well as two fitness suites.
