Junior School Sport

Sports at St George's College Junior School

St. George's College and St. George's College Junior School have a fine tradition of playing sport that stretches back over a long period of time. Since moving to its present site in Thames Street in 2000, the Junior School has ensured that the facilities are of the highest quality. These include two rugby pitches, half-size Astroturf hockey pitch, two all weather tennis courts equipped with markings for two Netball courts, two artificial cricket nets and all weather cricket pitch, a fully equipped gymnasium and an outdoor swimming pool. The children also have the opportunity to use the extensive College facilities which include two full sized Astroturf pitches, indoor tennis centre and a state of the art athletics track.

The Sports Department consists of an experienced and dynamic team of staff who are committed to the successful delivery of PE and Games. It is the largest department in the school incorporating external coaches and other teaching staff to ensure that the delivery is to a high level.

The aim of the Junior School's Games programme is to provide the facilities and teaching expertise to enable the talented pupils to aspire to success at National level but is grounded with a commitment to all pupils to provide opportunities to enjoy sport and take pride in representing their school. Success at the highest level has been achieved in a variety of sports for both boys and girls: The Under 9 boys' Rugby team were crowned National Champions in March 2009, the girls have consistently qualified for the National Finals in both Hockey and Netball and our Under 11 Girls proudly hold the title of National Hockey Champions 2009!

The PE curriculum on offer at the Junior School is wide and varied in its content including Dance, Gymnastics, Health-Related Fitness, Swimming and Athletics. It is delivered by qualified specialists and ably supported by other members of staff. All members of Year 6 have an opportunity to experience outdoor and adventurous activities during a week long residential trip.

Dance and Ballet are covered through specialist teachers in the Lower Years.

In Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 the pupils have a double PE lesson and a Games afternoon. The boys have an opportunity to compete in the three major sports of rugby, hockey and cricket. The girls compete at Hockey, Netball and Rounders. All pupils are offered opportunities to represent the school in the major sports during the week and at weekends. All pupils in Years 1 to 6 are given the opportunity to experience tennis coaching at the indoor tennis centre at the College on Saturday mornings. Other sporting activities on offer in the after school programme include: Athletics, Fencing, Football and  Table Tennis.
