New Sixth Form building(2010) - Henderson Centre

The Henderson Centre

The Henderson Centre is a new state of the art building at St George’s College providing Sixth Form group and silent study rooms, social space, five History and five Geography classrooms, staff offices and meeting areas. The building has been designed with a curved finish that matches the surrounding landscape and neighbouring building. Students will benefit from spacious, naturally light, high spec teaching areas and Sixth Form students will enjoy the bespoke and comfortable surroundings of their new social area which includes a large viewing balcony overlooking the beautiful school grounds.

Externally, students can relax and socialise in the newly landscaped gardens. The building has been designed and constructed with the environment at the forefront incorporating features such as solar heating for hot water and a top of the range air cooling and heating system to minimise emissions and provide a comfortable year round working environment.

Power and data are distributed via a suspended floor system thus giving the maximum flexibility for future changes in technology.

Access control is provided to all classrooms with the system being programmed to lock all doors outside of teaching hours.

Building Features - environmental
94% building waste recycled during construction
Solar water heating is provided to supply hot water to the toilet accommodation.
The building is heated and cooled using air source heat pumps which extract heat from the ambient external air and use this to either provide heating or cooling to the teaching spaces.
Air from the teaching spaces is transferred to the central corridor thus providing heating or cooling to this area before being removed via a heat exchange extract system. This renewable energy high efficiency system is combined with a highly insulated building with air tightness well below building regulation requirements to provide a low carbon building.

The classroom lighting is dimmable with daylight linked photocells and absence detection thus automatically adjusting lighting levels dependent upon the amount of natural daylight and switching the lighting off in the event of the classroom being unoccupied. Toilet lighting is switched using presence detection.
