back to home page St George's College is a leading independent co-educational Roman Catholic day School in Surrey for 3 – 18 year olds offering a values led education for all.

Third Year (13+)

Third Year

St George's accepts boys and girls at 13+ from preparatory schools into the Third Year of the College. Each year up to 44 places are reserved for this entry making the College one of the main providers of day school education of this type in the area.

Process For Application

Most families will have their first introduction to the College by attending one of the Open Days in March or September. Open Days on a Friday tend to be quieter than those on a Saturday and allow the opportunity to see something close to an ordinary school day. Saturday Open Days allow extensive tours with Sixth Formers and the chance to talk to staff.

Prospective parents are encouraged to talk to their prep school Heads about the choice of St George's for their son or daughter. Almost all local prep schools feed in to the College but some will know us better than others.  Parents are encouraged to arrange an appointment with Mr Joe Peake, the Headmaster of the College when sons and daughters are also welcome. A short tour with younger students can also be arranged at this time. Interviews with prospective children, however, are not a part of the entry process.

When parents feel that St George's is a strongly possible choice for their son/daughter, they are encouraged to Register.  Registration should take place before the dates given below.

Selection Criteria and Process

The following criteria are used to determine entry:

  • Academic performance
  • Reference from the Prep school
  • Indication of interest in the school as demonstrated by attending Open Day etc
  • The presence of a sibling already in the College or previous family connection

There is an expectation that the family are sympathetic to the Christian, Catholic, Josephite ethos of St George's.

It is important for families and the College that we ensure the likely success of a boy or girl through Common Entrance. We would never wish to turn someone away in their Common Entrance year. To do this we run two pre-test sessions.

Pre-Test at 11+

This takes place in the January, two calendar years before entry. Thus the pre-test for September 2012 entry will take place in January 2010. The pre-test candidate will take the same examination papers as those candidates seeking entry at age 11. Parents will need to stipulate before the examination that the application is for 13+. The assessment is in mathematics, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Specimen maths and English papers are available. Registration for this must take place before the last day of the November preceding the test. It is not expected that more than half the places available will be taken up by the 11+ process. Subsequent to success in the pre-test, a family will not be permitted to change a 13+ application into an 11+ application. A child failing to gain an offer at 11+ can re-register for 12+.

Pre-Test at 12+

This takes place in the January, one calendar year before entry. Thus the pre-test for September 2012 entry will take place in January 2011. The test is skills based and cannot be revised for. There are no specimen papers available. Registration for this must take place before the last day of the November preceding the test. Some of the places available will have been allocated to candidates who took the 11+ pre-test.

The families of boys and girls who pass the pre-test will be made a conditional offer of a place. The place will depend upon:

  • The attainment of a minimum 55% average at Common Entrance across all subjects and the core subjects of Maths, English, Science and French.
  • A fully supportive reference from the preparatory school
  • The receipt of a deposit which is only refundable when the boy/girl leaves the College. The purpose of this is to ensure that only those families who definitely want their son/daughter to join the College, should continue to hold a reserved place. Presently this sum is £800. Families taking the 11+ pre-test will not be asked for this deposit until the next calendar year. Those taking the 12+ pre-test will be asked for the deposit in only a short period of time.

A separate booklet describes the scholarships on offer at the College. Applications for academic scholarship should be made through the preparatory school.
